The Port Hills
Separating Christchurch from Banks Peninsula and Lyttelton Harbour are the Port Hills. These can be clearly seen from your room at Stoneleigh Lodge, a premier Christchurch bed and breakfast in New Zealand. A short trip by car will allow you to explore them.
Initially settlers coming to Christchurch, with all of their goods, had to travel from Lyttelton to Christchurch over the Port Hills. Staging points were used for changing horses, food and refreshment as well as accommodation on the long journey to and from Lyttelton. A number of purpose-built buildings were built at these staging points to cater for early travellers. Two of these lovely old buildings, the Sign of the Takahe and the Sign of the Kiwi, can be seen and visited as you drive over the Port Hills, on your way to Governors Bay, Charteris Bay and Diamond Harbour.
The Sign of the Kiwi is at the summit of this drive and is a favourite place to stop, have a break and enjoy the panoramic views of the Canterbury Plains and Christchurch. While there you can buy an ice cream, or have a coffee in the Sign of the Kiwi.
"Leave your Christchurch bed and breakfast in NZ early and welcome dawn like the early settlers!"
